Archimedes’ Principle
It was a sunny day in Eureka Shores, and Sparky, the fluffy dog, had decided to explore the town's muddy patches. By the time Sparky returned home, he was more mud than dog, looking like a furry brown ball rather than his usual golden-white self.
Maya chuckled as she observed Sparky's transformation. "Oh, Sparky, what have you been up to?" she teased, giving him a playful pat on the head. "Looks like someone needs a good bath!"
Determined to make Sparky sparkle again, Maya filled the bathtub with water. However, every time she tried to lower Sparky into the tub, water splashed over the edges.
Confused, Maya scratched her head. "Why does this happen every time?" she pondered aloud.
Curious and with a scientific itch, Maya decided to investigate. She called her friends Liam, Zoey, and Orion, seeking their help to solve the splashing mystery.
Liam grinned, ready for an adventure. "Maybe it's Sparky's magic powers making the water overflow," he joked.
Zoey, thoughtful as always, pondered, "Perhaps there's a scientific explanation behind it?"
Orion, the ever-helpful robot, chimed in, "I believe Archimedes' principle of water displacement might hold the answer."
With their curiosity sparked, they gathered around the bathtub, observing as Maya tried once again to lower Sparky into the water. Just as before, the water sloshed over the sides.
"Archimedes' principle states that the volume of the water displaced by an object in a bath is equal to the volume of the part of the object that is in the water," Orion explained.
Zoey scratched her head, “Um, what does that mean?”
“When I say water displaced, I mean the water that’s pushed out of the tub. So the volume, or space that water takes up, is equal to the space that Sparky takes up in the water!” Orion said.
"Wait, so when Sparky gets into the tub, the amount of water he pushes out equals his volume?" Maya asked, intrigued.
"Almost. It’s equal to the volume that Sparky has in the tub. So if his head is out of the water, that volume wouldn’t count." Orion replied. "When Sparky gets in, his furry body pushes the water out of the tub, causing the overflow."
Eager to put their newfound knowledge into practice, Maya and her friends devised a clever plan. They filled the tub halfway, ensuring Sparky wouldn't displace too much water. This time, Sparky slid into the bath without any splashing.
"Sparky, you've mastered Archimedes' principle!" Maya laughed, delighted by the successful bath time lesson.
With a clean and happy Sparky, Maya and her friends treated themselves to some ice cream. They couldn’t have done it without the Archimedes’ Principle!
